Brooklyn woman finishes fourth in junior Pan Am shot put

BROOKLYN - A Queens County athlete fell just short of bringing home a medal at her first international track and field competition.

Sarah Mitton, who is from Brooklyn, competed for Team Canada in women’s shot put at the Junior Pan American Games in Edmonton Aug. 2.

Mitton, a 2014 graduate from Liverpool High School, placed fourth in the event. She had Canada’s highest finish in women’s shot put, where she threw distances of 13.77 metres, 14.20 m, 12.93 m, 14.02 m, 14.57 m and 13.76 m.

Her best throw, 14.57 m, was .77 m behind Sophia Rivera of the United States, who took third place with a distance of 15.34 m. The gold went to Raven Saunders, also of the United States, with a distance of 18.27 m, while Portious Warren of Trinidad and Tobago captured the silver with a distance of 15.57 m.

Mitton currently attends the University of Windsor on an athletics scholarship. She has been competing in track and field for several years now, breaking the junior shot put record during a district track and field event when she was in Grade 8.
