Gulls get gold


Major bantam championships held in Liverpool March 22-25

LIVERPOOL – The Gulls are the 2017-2018 Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League champions.

The All Credit Auto Rangers and The Gulls competed in the gold medal game, held at Queens Place Emera Centre March 25. The Gulls won the game 4-2, gaining the lead in the third period.  

The Gulls, with players based out of the Sackville and East Hants area, got off to a strong start March 22 with a 3-0 win against Pro Hockey Life Harbour Storm, then defeated Queens County’s Western Hurricanes 5-0 the next day. They went on to tie the Bedford Sport Bridge Barons 2-2 March 23, then defeated the Truro Bearcats 7-4 on March 24 after a 6-5 loss to ACCEL Physio earlier in the day, good for second in the standings after round-robin play.

The Auto Rangers had a clearer shot to the final, finishing first in the standings with five wins and one loss. The team had a 5-2 win against the Bedford Sport Bridge Barons March 22; a 6-3 win against ACCEL Physio March 23; a 6-1 win March 23 against the Pro Hockey Life Harbour Storm; a 3-2 win over Truro March 24; and a 3-1 win over the ACCEL Physio later in the day. The team’s only loss came in the final. 

Accel Physio and the Truro Bearcats faced off in the bronze medal game at 10 a.m. March 25. The Bearcats won the game 6-5, scoring four points in the first period and two in the third. 

Strong showing for Hurricanes

The O’Regan’s Subaru Western Hurricanes hosted the March 22 to 25 event, finishing fourth in the standings. 

Over three days, the Hurricanes played four games, winning two and losing two. The Hurricanes came away from the tournament with a win March 24, when the Liverpool-based team beat the Bedford Sports Bridge Barons 8-2. Luke Woodworth scored two goals in the game, and Konnor Benjamin, Lawson Cook, Mason MacLean, Nolan O’Brien, Ryan Hopkins and Nolan Atwood each had one goal.

Benjamin and Will Chisholm each made two assists, while Cook, MacLean, O’Brien, Hopkins, and Aaron Lane made one assist respectively.
