Alcohol advertising has prolific and profound effects on youth, said a Johns Hopkins University graduate student.

Samantha Cukier told a recent webinar indicated a government monopoly with a revenue mandate cannot make safety a priority.

The researcher, who worked for seven years in Nova Scotia, showed slides of what she termed a network of pro-drinking stimuli at festivals and sporting events.

“The ads set the stage for future use,” she said, which today is earlier, more, and more often.

Cukier added alcohol is cheap and easily available to youth with few social consequences.

“Big alcohol reigns supreme with little or no controls,” she said.

Cukier pointed to the decision last year by Halifax regional council to approve Molson Coors as a corporate sponsor for the new skating oval.

The company will spend $400,000 over 10 years to have its name on the adjacent plaza, which will be used for entertainment and food. According to Cukier, the plaza faces Citadel High School.

As a foster parent in Kings County I see many cases of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome in babies and toddlers. Many of these children are born to young moms heavily influenced by the drinking culture in our society. Many pregnant women do not realize that drinking while pregnant can cause permanent brain damage in their unborn baby. Alcoholic beverages NEED warning labels and school need to teach the dangers of alcohol consumption when pregnant!
