Famous Soprano to appear at Astor Theatre

Rebecca Caine will appear with Robert Kortgarrd at the Astor Theatre on Feb. 23.

LIVERPOOL - From the prestigious stages of London's West End, Glyndbourne and the Royal Shakesepeare Company, internationally acclaimed soprano Rebecca Caine will take to the Astor Theatre stage with pianist Robert Kortgaard, in a concert showcasing some of the best songs from Hollywood movies.

Rebecca recently won the People's Choice Award for Cabaret Singer of the year.

Born in Toronto, Caine studied at the Guildhall School of Music, London. Uniquely, her career has been divided between Opera and Musical Theatre, making her West End debut at 19 in the role of Laurey in Oklahoma. She then sang the role of Eliza in My Fair Lady on the National tour. While making her debut at Glyndebourne as Amor in L'incoronazione di Poppea, she was asked to join the Royal Shakespeare Company where she created the role of Cosette in Les Miserables.

After a successful West End run she joined the original cast of Phantom of the Opera to play Christine opposite Michael Crawford. She then returned to Toronto to repeat the role in the Canadian premiere of Phantom of the Opera. During her run in Toronto she joined the Canadian Opera Company to make her highly praised North American debut in the title role of Lulu.

Her extensive cabaret career has included Jermyn Street, the Pheasantry, Lauderdale House, Sydmonton, (Newbury Spring Festival), Exeter Festival, Cliveden, Theatre Barn and the Buxton Festival. She made her US cabaret debut at the Halsted Centre in Chicago and gave the first performance at the new Telus recital hall at the Royal College of Music in Toronto. Miss Caine was honoured to give the Noel Coward Birthday Cabaret at Drury Lane.

Pianist Robert Kortgaard was born in Regina, Saskatchewan and grew up in Calgary,  Kortgaard has performed as a soloist with major Canadian orchestras and has given recitals throughout Canada and the United States, as well as in England, Finland, Portugal, Italy, Indonesia, the Czech Republic, China and Japan. He is a favorite collaborator of many of Canada's finest instrumental soloists, vocalists and chamber groups. His performances are frequently heard on CBC Radio, and he has recorded for the Centrediscs, Marquis Classics/EMI, CBC Records, Teldec and ATMA Classique labels.
