Anyone looking for a laugh can head to the North Queens Fire Hall in Caledonia to hear comedian Jimmy the Janitor Oct. 20.
The doors are set to open at 6:30 p.m., with the show starting at 7:30 p.m., and proceeds are going to the Caledonia and Area Nursery School. The fundraising event is open to anyone 14 years old and up.
Candice Flemming, the fundraising coordinator of the Caledonia and Area Nursery School, came up with the idea to have the comedy night.
Jimmy the Janitor, also known as Sandy Gillis, is a Cape Breton native who now lives on Prince Edward Island.
“He tends to tell Maritime-themed type jokes,” said Mya Uhlman, president of the Caledonia and Area Nursery School.
In addition to the comedy act, there will be tickets sold – one for a cord of wood and the other for a rod and reel.
“We are a small nursery school run by a parent board,” said Uhlman.
Eleven students between the ages of three and five attend the school, which runs out of North Queens Community School. The nursery school is open three days a week for three hours each day and is always accepting students.
Previously, there have been morning and afternoon classes, but there aren’t enough students presently to offer both options. Uhlman said the school can accept up to 24 students, and then there would be two classes.
“We have to raise all of the funds, either through fundraising or grants, to pay for our teacher and pay for day-to-day running of the program,” said Uhlman.
Uhlman said the school has a fundraising goal this year of $4,000.
“It gives the opportunity for children in that age range to come and learn some social skills and be around other children and learn routines,” said Uhlman about the nursery school.
The Caledonia and Area Nursery School plans to do more fundraising by selling citrus orders at the beginning of November. The school also has a Christmas concert scheduled to happen at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 19 at the Westfield Hall. The snow date is Dec. 20.
People who don’t have tickets for Jimmy the Janitor can buy them at the door.
