The North Queens Spartans are the 2009/10 the Nova Scotia Schools Athletic Federation's (NSSAF) Division 4 Senior Boys Basketball champions.
The Spartans captured the banner on March 6 at the eight team, single elimination championship title, hosted by Lockeport.
Seeded number one going into tourney, the Spartans opened with a 90-40 win over Fountain Academy. Joel Frail, Cory Ryan, Nathan Forrest and Brandon Forrest all notched 14 points.
In semi-final action the Spartans upset the Pugwash Panthers 96-71 to advance to the championship contest. Channing Carver led North Queens with 28 points, with 25 from Joel Frail, 25 and 20 from Cory Ryan.
In the championship game, the Spartans nudged Colchester Christian Academy 68-57 for the banner. Joel Frail netted 19 points, with 14 from Nathan Forrest and 13 from Channing Carver.
"It was tough competition the whole way through," said coach Ryan Merry. "But hard work paid off. "The team worked really hard all year long."
While the team had some difficulty with injury early in the season they ended up posting a 25-5 regular season record, going on to win the NSSAF Western Region title. They also won the Nettie Benedict memorial tourney.
This season will mark the end of an era for the Spartans, with the graduation of starters Allan Carver, Joel Frail, Brandon Forrest, Lucas Smith, Cory Ryan and Nathan Forrest. The six have been playing basketball together since elementary school.
