It was a week of many firsts for Jill Mouzar.
On Sunday, Jan. 28, Mouzar’s Mayflower rink won the provincial Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Liverpool with an unbeaten 9-0 record, earning the team a spot in the national women’s finals in Lethbridge, Alberta.
To win the final, Mouzar had to beat Kay Zinck’s renowned team, a team that featured three-time world champion Colleen Jones.
Up until the Liverpool tournament, Mouzar’s team had never defeated the Zinck rink. To win the provincials they beat them three times, including a 4-2 victory in the final.
The 23-year-old Liverpool native said playing in her former hometown rink in the provincials was an advantage, noting that she drew support from the many fans who came out to watch the games, including a few special ones.
“My grandmother was able to come to every game,” she said. “I was spoiled by having so many nice people around me after the games.”
Mouzar and her team, third Meredith Harrison, second Teri Lake and lead Hayley Clarke leave for Lethbridge on Valentine’s Day for the Feb. 17-25 national televised tournament.
For Mouzar, a former national junior champion, it will be her first national women’s tournament.
In Liverpool, Mouzar curled in front of more than 300 fans, she will curl in front of many more in Lethbridge, but isn’t daunted by the attention.
“You have to keep your head level,” she said. “You take everything one game, one end, one rock at a time.”
For now, Mouzar says she and her teammates will practise hard for the upcoming games, noting the high level of competition in women’s curling and the success of former Nova Scotia rinks.
“It’s nice to be able to represent our province …I think we’ll do that well,” she said.
