The excitement in the arena rose on Dec. 29 as people gathered to watch the two championship games.

The first game saw the Liverpool Cougars’ Atom team compete against the Shelburne Flames. Liverpool’s Bantam team also met the Shelburne Flames. Both games saw the Cougars walk away with gold medals.

Atom game

Liverpool’s Atom team beat Shelburne with a score of 8-2. Nolan Bowers scored the Cougars’ first goal less than two minutes into Period 1. The Flames made a comeback about two minutes later, with Madison Atwood (Maguire Nickerson and Chris Chetwynd) scoring the first goal. Liverpool gained six more points in the first period.

Nickerson scored Shelburne’s second goal in the third period. At the end of the game, each player received a medal. Most Valuable Players (MVPs) were also recognized.

Brett Atkinson was Shelburne’s offensive MVP, while Gage Locke was awarded defensive MVP.

Liverpool’s MVPs were Emma Gillis for offense and Andrew Dauphinee for defense.

Close call for Bantam

A nail-biting game between Liverpool and Shelburne’s Bantam teams resulted in a 6-5 win for the Cougars. The win came a minute and half into overtime, with Joel Deighton’s unassisted goal.

The first period saw just one goal for Shelburne, scored by Cameron Atwood and assisted by Roman Hines and Skylar O’Connell.

Second period was a different story, with the Cougars and Flames neck-and-neck. Finally, Flames’ player Ethan Nickerson (Dylan Ross and Hines) brought the score to 4-3 with 18 seconds left on the clock.

The Cougars and Flames remained close in the third period. Finally Shelburne scored, bringing the game to a tie with 4:22 remaining. Neither team scored in the last four minutes, leading the game into overtime.

You have given detailed coverage of the Atom and Bantam games and medal winners. What was the outcome of the Novice tournament or possibly Liverpool did not win and that is why there is no coverage. Remember that good journalism involves impartial coverage of events.
