A Queens County man will appear in court for trial this summer facing charges of using the Internet to lure a child under the age of 16 for the purpose of having sex.
Halifax Regional Police allege that Richard Austin MacLean, 47, of Greenfield was going to meet what he thought was a 15-year old girl who he had been corresponding with on the Internet for almost a month.
Instead, police say the accused had been communicating with the Halifax Regional Police Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) Unit.
“We had an officer online acting as a child under 16,” said media relations officer, Cst. Brian Palmeter of the Halifax Regional Police.
The officer invited MacLean to meet in a parking lot in Halifax.
“He (MacLean) sent correspondence of a sexual nature,” said Palmeter.
He explained that the ICE Unit is relatively new and has been in operation for a little over four years, typically involving cases of people sharing child pornography images.
“In 10 months only two have been charged with luring,” said Cst. Palmeter.
Police said that MacLean recently moved to Nova Scotia from Alberta.
He was released on bail with conditions to limit his contact with children.
