Guilty plea for hundreds of thousands of dollars in charity fraud

Milton resident, Norma Mitchell pled guilty Feb. 24 to defrauding three south Queens Co. charities out of nearly $150,000.

The Queens RCMP detachment investigation reached back to Dec. 2003. The 62-year-old woman was charged on May 20, 2008 and will be sentenced 9:30 a.m. April 7 in Liverpool Provincial Court. A pre-sentence report has been ordered.

Her guilty pleas were related to three charges, down from nine charges at the time of her arrest.

She admitted to taking $91,916.42 from Milton United Baptist Church, defrauding Queens Early Childhood Development Association of 44,509.60 and defrauding the Royal Canadian Legion Mersey Branch #38 Ladies Auxiliary $1,800, all by writing unapproved cheques.

She was a volunteer. Representatives of the larger victims did not wish to public comment on the crimes.
