People’s pennies came rolling in to more than a dozen volunteer fire departments for the Pennies for Protection Challenge 2012.

Participating Queens County departments also included Greenfield and District, with $1,260; Charleston, with $463.50; and Port Medway, with $326.

Thirteen departments reported a collection of about 4,245 pounds, which equals about $8,500, wrote Donna Hatt, White Point Beach Resort’s marketing manager, in an email.

Hatt says it’s difficult for fire departments to fundraise because of how costly equipment is, and she says the challenge was one many people could take part in.

The challenge was organized by White Point Beach Resort, as a way helping out the fire departments in the area. White Point's main lodge was lost to fire in November 2011.
