James Leroy Leopold was sentenced to seven years of incarceration, minus 342 days for time served, in Nova Scotia Supreme Court in Bridgewater June 27.

Thirty-two-year-old Leopold was charged in the death of his fiancée Laura Lee Robertson, in April 2011. A six-woman, six-man jury found him guilty of manslaughter May 16, 2012.

The Crown asked for a sentence of seven to 10 years with almost a year’s credit, and the defence asked for four to six years with a year’s credit.

“We as judges deal with many cases of domestic violence, and we worry that they may lead to tragic results. Sometimes they are seen as not so serious in the early days,” said Justice Coady at the sentencing.

“Fortunately, they do not always escalate, but it is never far from the judicial mind. But unfortunately for Ms. Robertson, her family and her community, this is one of those tragic cases that did escalate.”
