There’s a new face and sense of optimism at the South Shore Public Libraries (SSPL). Troy Myers has stepped into the role of Chief Librarian, and now oversees all of the libraries within the South Shore.
Originally from Dartmouth, Myers has vacationed frequently along the shore, and has various family members in the area. Due to these connections, he has been able to see how the area is beginning to shape and change with time. He hopes that these changes will also positively affect the various community libraries.
“It’s a pretty exciting time on the South Shore,” said Myers. “It’s going to a really good growth phase in places like in Bridgewater, down around Chester and in Liverpool. I felt a nice sense of vibrancy.”
He didn’t say any specific goals for each community, but one of his overall ideas is to change the public view of what a library is and make the building a more central part of the community.
“I would like to give the libraries over the South Shore a higher profile and form a really strong relationship with their communities so that they really are considered community centres.”
Myers started the position on July 5, following the departure of former SSPL Chief Librarian, Cheryl Stenstrom. He previously worked with the Halifax Regional Municipality for 15 years and in Africa with various development projects for the country.
