The award-winning community outreach program, now in its fifth consecutive year, will visit fairs and festivals across Atlantic Canada from June through August.

Developed by Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC), the Be Smart. Be Safe. Tour will be at Privateer Days on July 2 to 4 (10am – 5pm). The colourful trailer, filled with displays and exhibits, will be located in Privateer Park.

For 2009, the tour covers a broader range of issues that are increasingly relevant to the public. Canadians need practical ways to deal with the effects of climate change and to address this, IBC has added two new interactive exhibits.

The interactive exhibit, The Rain Cycle demonstrates how actions such as changing the lot grading or installing backflow valves can help to prevent a flooded basement. Another new display explains how the use of rain barrels could also help to reduce basement flooding and conserve water.

IBC's popular driving simulator, the D.U.M.B. Car, has demonstrated the dangers of distracted driving to thousands of Canadians. This year, the upgrade – DUMB Car 2.0 – covers a broader range of road safety issues, including driving in adverse weather conditions, avoiding road hazards and identifying point-of-no-return at traffic lights. In addition, a new eco driving segment teaches drivers how to improve fuel efficiency and reduce their carbon footprints.

Other Be Smart. Be Safe exhibits include the popular Survivor 72, a quiz that tests people’s knowledge about what goes into emergency kit in case disaster strikes and Safe Home Now that teaches kids how to identify potential hazards around the house.

As part of its education program, IBC has trained a team of university students to act as youth ambassadors. For the complete tour calendar, visit www.ibc.ca.
