Liverpool’s 56 meters have been modified recently to accept enhanced payment options and the municipality is now selling a new swipe card as an alternative to coins.
“It will be much simpler for people than going to the parking meter and realizing you don’t have any change,” said municipal clerk Chris McNeill.
The swipe cards are available to the public until Christmas at a discounted rate of 20 hours of parking for $15. Higher increments are available at a 25 per cent savings until that time. In January the price will revert to the regular price of $1 per hour.
The cards are being promoted as a “great Christmas gift for the hard-to-buy person or a regular downtown shopper”.
Each card can be re-programmed 64 times and they are available in two designs: the Fort Point lighthouse or the Liverpool waterfront.
“This is new for us, we’re moving into the 21rst century,” said McNeill at the Region of Queens Municipal office where the cards can be purchased.
Last week, bylaw officer Kelley-Anne Hurley was busy installing new mechanisms on each meter with the help of Liverpool Regional High Grade 12 co-op student Thomas Whalen.
