Up until now, Queens Place has been seen in the light of an arena for ice events. While important, it was also built with the intent of being an events centre as well. Nova Scotia Music Week will be its first big test, something general manager Neil Raymond is very aware of.

Nova Scotia Music Week is back in Queens County this week, bringing in talent from all over the province. Brian Fralic and Susan MacLeod, members of the host committee, were out promoting the festival at the World Hockey exhibition game on Nov. 2. Passes for the venues and tickets for the gala event were still available at press time.

The staff have been talking with other facilities that hold events such as this, to get a feel of what needs to be done to host the event.

"This is something that's been ongoing since before we opened," says Raymond.

It will be a lot of work, especially since it is the first time they have set things up, but he is confident it will show a whole new side to the facility.

"We're really excited, for the transformation and bringing in a whole new venue."

Transforming the centre also means exposing the venue to a large group of potential clients all at once, he says.

Getting the facility ready will take several days, he says. On Nov. 7 and 8 the supplies stored at the Region of Queens Department of Works building will be brought over, along with a crew of six to eight to do the work. The ice needs to be covered, and the glass taken down. All along the wall by the penalty boxes 20 foot draping will be set up with a stage in front. Extra seating for 500 is also being brought it.

Once finished, the crews from Nova Scotia Music Week move in to do lighting and sound setup, followed by two days of sound checks and rehearsals.

On the day of the event, Queens Place is providing security and running the bar, as well as troubleshooting anything on their end of the gala, before tearing it all back down again and turning it back into the arena again.
