Lt. Govenor attends local prayer breakfast

White Point Beach Resort hosted the first Leadership Prayer Breakfast on Oct. 28, bringing together members of the community to meet and pray together.

The first breakfast was held more than 2,000 years ago, when Jesus invited his disciples to join him for breakfast at the Sea of Tiberias.

Prayer breakfasts are currently held in 55 countries around the world, including every province in Canada. In Nova Scotia Halifax will hold its 30th on April 15, and Cape Breton currently holds one as well.

Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia Mayann Francis was the guest speaker at the breakfast, and spoke about what it takes to be a leader. “Leaders are made, not born,” she said, and posed the question what do we teach to inspire leadership. “What kind of leadership do we need? It depends on the time.”

Francis spoke about the many challenges leaders face, and the leaders who came when they were needed most. Specifically she spoke about three that inspired her greatly: Rev. Desmond Tutu, Martin Luther King Junior and her father Archpriest George Francis.

The challenge leaders in face are how do they decide whose values are correct. In order to do that, she says we must agree on what is wrong. Abuse, Discrimination and poverty are all examples of things everyone agrees are wrong. “If we can agree on what is wrong, surely we have a basis for what is right.”

Francis said leadership is not easy, but it must be done without compromising values. The desire of leader should also be to motivate and inspire others.

Francis finished her speech with a prayer “I am only one, but I am one,

I can’t do everything, but I can do something,

The something I can do, I ought to do

What I ought to do, by the grace of god I will do.”
