Mersey Band leader Rod MacGillvray, is looking forward to seeing smiles and toe tapping on March 2 as he conducts the Mersey Swing Band.
Don Smith warms up before practice. The Mersey Swing Band is hosing a roast beef dinner on March the 2 at the Legion.
Following the Mersey Band’s fifth annual fund-raising dinner, the Mersey Swing band will take to the stage at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall, Liverpool. The Swing Band started in May of 2012 and has really come together. Some of the music you will hear at the dinner includes charts of Duke Ellington, Hoagy Carmichael, Richard Rogers and other leading composers of the 1930s and 1940s.
The repertoire will also include more contemporary tunes such as Cy Coleman and Sway -a favorite of mega-star Canadian crooner Michael Buble. For rock fans, the program will include the Beatles, The Beachboys and Bon Jovi.
The Mersey Band Roast Beef Dinner gets under way at 5:30 p.m. with the dinner served at 6 p.m. Roast beef along with vegetables, roasted potatoes and gravy and delicious squares will be on the menu. Members of the Mersey Band will be preparing the meal, completing behind the scenes tasks and serving tables.
Proceeds from the dinner will be used to raise funds for Mersey Band activities-especially its youth band camp and training program.
Band Leader Rod MacGillvray says he’s "very pleased with how well the swing band is going”. The Swing Band gives members a chance to explore the rich heritage of swing, jazz and contemporary standards and new works. It’s a lot of fun to perform!
Tickets for the dinner are $12.50 or $6 for children under 12. Tickets are available at Veinot’s Footwear in Liverpool, from Anne Dunlop at 354-3335, Pat Boone at 354-3202 or any member of the Mersey Band.
