As part of the launch for its second year in action, the high school’s Gay/Straight Alliance (GSA) group hung a pride flag last Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 18.
Pink-shirt clad students gathered by a table in the foyer. On the table was a cake with a rainbow on it, and when the lunch bell rang students eagerly gathered for a taste. The group was also selling t-shirts with the slogan, ‘Love is Love.’
Brandon Whynot, the group’s co-chair, said it plans to puts rainbow-coloured barcode stickers that say ‘No judgment or labels here,’ on each window in the school. The co-chair of the group is Tanisha Yee. Claudine LeBlanc is the teacher advisor.
One of the things the group plans to do in the autumn is attend Making Waves, a gay/straight alliance conference put on by the Youth Project in Halifax. Some members went to the conference last year as well.
The Youth Project is a nonprofit, charitable organization providing support and services around sexual orientation and gender identity to youth aged 25 and under.
Whynot says another thing the group hopes to do more of this year is work with other GSAs, such as the one at Parkview Education Centre and Bridgewater Junior Senior High School.
Part of the idea of LRHS’s GSA is to help promote awareness surrounding homophobia and transphobia.
