On May 25 at 6:30 p.m., the Mersey Heritage Society is hosting an open meeting at the Hunts Point Community Hall for anyone interested in hearing more about Hunts Point Wharf.  People are encouraged to come and share photographs, slides, stories, and folklore about the Hunts Point Wharf and area and the role it might have played in their lives.

Topics :
Mersey Heritage Society , Hunts Point , Queens , Atlantic Coast

Hunts Point Wharf is one of the most popular sites in Queens County.  Paintings and photographs of the scenic ocean-side wharf can be seen in local offices and living rooms throughout Queens.

What makes Hunts Point Wharf so popular? Is it the stunning sunsets that hit the shores on those warm summer nights? Or the quant fish shacks that line each side of the slip like two steady arms helping bring in the haul of the day?

The quiet wharf has quite a history, going back to the 1700s.  Sitting on the Atlantic Coast, the wharf housed many boats, gear and men over the years and has been battered by the sea on more than a few occasions.

Enjoy an evening out with the Mersey Heritage Society. Coffee, tea and refreshments will be served. Queens County has such great communities and rich heritage that one doesn’t have to venture far to be entertained. For more information visit www.mersey.ca or call David Chandler at 354-3166.

Really look forward to this! My aunt made a painting of the wharf in the late 1940's while visiting my mother who was staying at the cottages...McGowan's? There is a fishing schooner in the foreground that we think belonged to a Doggett. Last fall we stopped by the Hunts Point wharf and Kevin Huskins was preparing for lobstering-he had a fire going in his stove and several men had gathered for a conflab, a scene repeated all along the coast. This is where the real decisions are made and the best stories told, on the wharves and in the fish sheds-but I don't know how the fishermen get any work done when there is so much to talk about! Hunts Point wharf is a special place that remains very vital and is definitely deserving of heritage society. attention.
