William Shakespeare is being put on trial at the Astor Theatre on Oct. 21. His crime? Being dull, irrelevant and just plain boring to modern audiences. His accusers just happen to be his own characters!

A sure bet for all ages, Shakespeare on Trial was designed as a school show by Webb and Henderson and is directed by Martha Irving.

“We have played numerous high schools and theatre venues with Shakespeare On Trial,” said Webb. “We are thrilled to be bringing it back to venues in 2011.”  The play is touring to high and junior high schools and theatres as far away as Georgia and North Carolina.

Shakespeare On Trial is perfect for theatre-lovers. It’s an irreverent, funny play that is short in length and long in laughs! “We are delighted to open the tour in Liverpool as guests of the Winds of Change.”

Shakespeare On Trial, sees writer Bill Shakespeare standing trial for being dull and irrelevant to modern audiences. The kicker is that he’s accused by four of his own most famous characters: MacBeth, Iago, Hamlet and Juliet.

Shakespeare On Trial is an 85-minute, fast-paced play created to help the Bard’s words find an ear today. Simon Henderson plays Bill Shakespeare, and the two actors are traveling with two stage managers Sylvia Bell & Jamie Bradley, along with technician Jessica Lewis and is directed by Martha Irving.

The play features a ‘greatest hits’ of famous Shakespeare quotes, speeches and the occasional soliloquy (featuring scenes from Romeo & Juliet, Othello, MacBeth and Hamlet.) The show becomes interactive for the last 15 minutes as Shakespeare calls upon the audience to help prove his point: “The play’s the thing…”
