Terri McCulloch is piloting a whale - a Volkswagen Humpback.
The Bay of Fundy Tourism manager is driving the converted VW Beetle around New Brunswick and Nova Scotia to “promote travel to, from and across the Bay.”
Her personal VW was transformed into a traveling advertisement for Fundy’s delights through a partnership between the non-profit organization and Bay Ferries, whose Digby to Saint John “trip can really add to the visitor’s experience of the Bay of Fundy because they can travel the Bay as a loop,” McCulloch says.
Created by graphic designer Derek Mason, the car was “wrapped” by Trimline and the tail and fin made from Styrofoam, finished with fibreglass by Atlantex, a Nova Scotian company specializing in museum displays.
The snazzy ride draws attention to whale watching as a summer activity, McCulloch points out.
“Whale habitat is one of the Bay’s notable features,” with 15 species calling Fundy home, including minke, humpback, fin and right whales.
Another bonus is drawing attention to the Bay of Fundy’s spot in the New 7Wonders of Nature competition, which McCulloch says has increased awareness of all aspects of the Bay, from geology to hiking trails to the whales.
Based in Parrsboro, the whale car will travel with McCulloch while she films episodes of Bay of Fundy Tourism’s YouTube travel show. It will also roll into special events in the region.
