Queens Co. resident and Conservative Senator, the Honourable Senator Donald H. Oliver, Q.C. was honoured at the Planet Africa Awards gala, for making a profound difference in the lives of people of African heritage. Senator Oliver was awarded in the prestigious Leadership Award category.
Dr. Alexander MacGregor, President and Dean of the Toronto Institute of Pharmaceutical Technology, presented the award to the Senator.
Senator Oliver, a longtime resident of Pleasant River, has been an active businessman and entrepreneur for decades. His list of business endeavours includes real estate, fisheries, construction equipment, and exporting. He is also President of Pleasant River Farms Limited, a Christmas tree farm.
Mr. Moses A. Mawa, CEO of Planet Africa Group, said about Senator Oliver:
"The Honourable Senator is receiving the 2009 Planet Africa Leadership Award because he is a champion of human rights and prosperity.” He believes that Senator Oliver is committed to making the world a better place, not only for African Canadians, but also for all Canadians.
As barrister, teacher, entrepreneur, advocate and statesman, Senator Oliver has served the people of Nova Scotia and Canada with honour, distinction and achievement for more than 40 years.
He has been a member of the Senate of Canada since September 1990 where he has been defending the rights and interests of minority groups, Nova Scotians and Canadians at large. He has taken deep interest in the causes of Diversity and Pluralism. Senator Oliver speaks to students, government officials, departments and organizations across Canada and around the world on ways to foster a culture of inclusion and to embrace a diverse society.
Senator Oliver is deeply honoured to accept this distinction of his leadership. He said: “I am very proud to receive this highly coveted honour that I would like to share with all of you who believe in the power of change and the power of diversity.” He added, “We are all aware of the full potential of the Black community”.
