Medical problems lead to need

Rodney Whynot has had a “rough go of it” this past year according to his cousin, Heather Whynot.

So Heather called together Pam Miller and famed fundraiser organizer John Baker, and organized several fundraisers to help Rodney out. “Every little bit helps, and even if we can raise enough for the wheelchair it would be a big help,” she says.

Rodney’s troubles started last year after having a heart attack, which required three weeks in the hospital. Just one week after returning home, he fell and broke his right femur. Again he ended up in the hospital, this time from May until July.

While in the hospital, Rodney developed pressure sores on his feet that would not heal. Both developed gangrene, and he has since had both legs amputated.

The troubles have subsided for now; however, the costs are adding up. Rodney now requires a wheelchair and two prosthetic legs. The wheelchair alone is $4,000, of which insurance only covers half.

So Rodney gave his cousin a call. “He called me, and said ‘Heather, I’m having a really rough time’,” she says.

Heather has organized fundraisers before - for Tyler Roy in Milton - and was happy to help out. She gives Baker a lot of credit for helping her out as well. “He’s really something else. Just wonderful.”

She says people and businesses really pull together when someone is in need in this area, and is grateful for all the support received so far. “We live in a wonderful community,” says Heather.

The first fundraiser is a $5 car wash at Irving on April 18. It will go from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

On April 25, dust off your retro clothing. The fire hall is hosting a 50’s and 60’s dance on April 25. The night kicks off at 8 p.m., and throughout the night a silent auction, cake and pie auction and food table will be available. The retro clothing is optional, but attendees will lose their chance at the door prizes.

Throughout the month of April, tickets are available on two paintings, donated by Albert Laing and Audrey Milford. As a third prize, they also have 10 pounds of lobster. Tickets are $1 each, and the draw is April 25.
