Column: THE SMART APPROACH

By Meaghan Smart I recently went into unknown territory – the Liverpool Bowling Centre. I was unsure what to expect, but it resulted in one of the most enjoyable Monday mornings that I have had in a long time. Inside the bowling alley were ladies from the ‘Monday Morning Ladies Bowling League’ – a group of about 30 women of all ages. Their laughter and genuine excitement for the sport were contagious.

I sat down with my grandmother, Betty Smart, to watch the action. There is much more to Monday morning bowling than simply throwing balls down the alley and counting the fallen pins. There is enthusiastic cheering; high fives; lots of laughter, conversation and good natured razing; and most importantly, great friendships and camaraderie. The bowling seems to be secondary to spending time with one another and sharing a story and a laugh. The reoccurring theme as I sat and talked to the women as they waited their turn, was that it doesn’t matter how well they do, they just like to get out and have fun. When I asked Evie Fisher what her favourite part of the bowling league was, she quickly responded “the people. I love telling stories and joking around with everyone.”

One of the nicest people I met was Kathy Wentzell. For Kathy’s 85th birthday she received her own set of bowling balls and shoes from her family. She says, “They’re something that I always wanted, even if I never used them, but I do.” Kathy isn’t even the most seasoned member of the bowling league; 89-year-old Marguerite Eisnor usually attends, but is currently ill.

The Monday morning bowling league runs from September until May. There are six teams of five people. Bowling starts at 9:15 and you pay $7/day for three strings. There are no end-of-the-year trophies, just a banquet, some bowling and of course the opportunity to share a laugh.

As I was getting ready to leave it was my grandmother’s turn to keep score. “Sure I’ll keep score, can I cheat?” she said with a laugh as she sat down. If these ladies aren’t an inspiration to get out, be active and have fun, I’m not sure who is. If you are looking for an uplifting activity, stop by the bowling alley Monday mornings. I guarantee you will leave with a smile on your face and about 30 new friends.
