Kerry Morash will join the committee of 24, effective immediately, along with Robert Slater.
Prime Minister Brian Mulroney formed the National Round Table of Environment and Economy in 1988. Morash explained it focuses on climate change, climate adaptation and the committee will make recommendations to the Environment Minister.
Minister Baird said the knowledge and expertise of the two new members would contribute greatly to the work of the consultative body.
Morash applied for the position in February and found out May 15 he had been selected.
“I’m very excited; it’s really an honour to be able to take part in something like this,” he said.
Two of Morash’s main concerns are climate adaptation and air quality because of Nova Scotia’s location.
He explained Nova Scotia has been labeled the tailpipe of North America because the province gets pollution from the United States as well as Canada due to the way the jet stream moves.
The committee is focused on finding ways of combining environmental conservation and economic development to assist in Canada’s prosperity and secure its future.
“This is an opportunity for me to be able to relay issues and information from Nova Scotia to a national committee that’s looking at issues that are important to all of us,” said Morash.
Morash served as Minister of Environment and Labour of Nova Scotia from 2003 until 2006. He also served as Chair of the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment. As Minister, Morash implemented Nova Scotia's Green Plan and Green Plan II, and designated two new wilderness areas and four new nature reserves. In 2006, he became Minister of Economic Development of Nova Scotia.
Before entering public life, Morash worked for Bowater Mersey Paper Company in various capacities. In 2006, he received the Gold Leaf Award from the Canadian Council on Ecological Areas.
