What is the biggest problem facing the School board?
The biggest problem is the loss of the community schools and the identity of rural areas.  Too often decisions are made by other levels of government that affect these communities without really listening to the people in the community affected.
There has to be more attention on the needs for students who are starting school for the first time and students who are expected to conform to the culture of larger schools that have more profile in larger areas.
Busing these students for long hours and expecting them to be alert in the classroom is not right.
Another problem is the large size classes. Teacher-to-student radio has to be addressed.  Teachers are expected to provide the quality education in a single classroom with large numbers of students, some of which need special attention and a one-on-one focus, which cannot be achieved without hardship and stress for all. This would apply to all grades.
The funding issue is ongoing and needs attention from faculty and the school board.

What is the biggest problem facing the district you are running in?

The answer to this question would be similar to my answer in the first one, since all of Queens is one district.  The newest problem with the new district is that you will only have one member instead of three representing seven schools. How can one be expected to represent them affectively with only one voice?

What will you do to address these issues?

As a board member, I will continue to lobby with the South Shore Regional School Board and the Department Of Education  to get the funding increased, keep   our teachers working, our schools open as in some cases like Mill Village so our four year olds won’t have to spend almost an hour on a bus to and from school.

I will put education first when it comes to making decisions that affect our students and our system.

Help us get to know you a little:

I was born, raised and educated in Queens County and lived and worked here for all my life.  I retired from Stenpro at age 53 then worked as owner/operator at Veinots Print until we sold it to our daughter.

I am married to my wife Susan for 43 years. We have one daughter, Tanya Long, and a granddaughter Katie who attends Milton Centennial School in Grade 1. We have two step-grandchildren Colin and Jamie Long who attend Dr. John C. Wickwire Academy and South Queens Junior High School.

I am a Host Parent for international students who live with us and attend our schools.  We have had students living with us for the past six years. They attend Liverpool Regional High School. My wife and I open our home to them each school year and welcome the opportunity to share our culture and lifestyle with them. It gives me a good perspective and comparison on an education system in other countries and how we can learn from that.

I am a past South Shore Regional School Board member for Queens and served on that board for nearly three years. I was involved in most of the committees of the board, attended the meetings regularly and always expressed my views on the topics on the agenda.

Where and/or in what field do you work?

I am retired now, but do help Tanya at Veinot’s Print when needed.

What is something you consider unique about yourself?

I have lots of experience in management, sales, and a good attitude about our community.
