The Lunenburg-Queens Volunteer Centre is looking to help non-profit groups get a leg up, by discovering what their needs are and showing them how to fulfill them.

The centre has created The Community Group Retention and Expansion initiative as a way to engage non-profit organizations and community groups. They want to find out what their biggest challenges are for groups and what resources and information do they need.

Over the next six months the Lunenburg-Queens Volunteer Centre will be conducting assessments and providing support and resources to the many groups that make up non-profit and voluntary sectors in the region.  The information gathered during during the assessments will be used to enhance the design and delivery of programs, training, funding opportunities and other supports.

“We are aware of some funding opportunities and we’d like to be able to share that with community groups,” says Steph Beaton, CGRE Coordinator and Volunteer Navigator at the Lunenburg-Queens Volunteer Centre.

“We don’t give out the funding but we can certainly point people in the right direction,” she says.

The project will also be available to provide resources to groups looking to become a non-profit organization and can provide on demand training on how to run a board and other tasks involved in creating an organization or association.

The group hopes to help 150 groups, associations and organizations.  The 10 month project is being funded by the Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness, the Nova Scotia Department of Labour and Advanced Education, and the Nova Scotia department of Economic and Rural Development and Tourism.  The project is also being partially funded by four local municipal units.
