RECREATION NOTES

Bus trip to see "Stars on Ice"

Each spring, fans across Canada are treated to one of figure skating’s greatest spectacles as Stars on Ice presented by Smucker’s tours the country, and on April 23, You can be there! The Region of Queens Recreation Department is organizing a bus trip to see some of the best skaters in the world show their remarkable skating skill in a show to delight young and old alike. Such well-known skaters as four-time World Champion Kurt Browning, Olympic Gold Medalists Jamie Salè & David Pelletier, Olympic Silver Medalist Sasha Cohen and Olympic Bronze Medalist and reigning World Champion Jeff Buttle are all featured performers in the show. Space is limited; to reserve your spot call the Recreation Department at 354-5741. The bus will leave Liverpool at 3 p.m. from the Sobeys parking lot, with supper at 5 p.m. and the show beginning at 7 p.m. at the Halifax Metro Centre. Ticket Price is $75 (bus trip and seat at the show, tax included). Supper is on your own at Swiss Chalet, Bayers Lake Industrial Park. Waivers and payment in full must be received by March 6 to hold your seat at the April 23 show. ** Please note that cancellations/refunds will not be accepted after March 6.

Free Noon Hour Skating

Come enjoy free noon hour skating every Tuesday and Thursday (12 noon – 1 p.m.) until March 31 with the Recreation Department at the Queens Memorial Arena, Old Bridge St., Liverpool. Ages 17 and up. Free!

Community Volunteer Income Tax Program

Registration for the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program will be taken at the Recreation Department by callING 354-5741. This service is free of charge and is available for low income/simple tax situations (Single person under $25,000 per year/Family under $30,000 per year). For more information and to schedule your appointment, please contact the Recreation Department.

Summer Employment Opportunities with the Region of Queens Dept. of Recreation and Community Facilities

Applications are currently being accepted for several Summer employment opportunities. Positions available include Manager, Assistant Manager and two Instructor positions at the Milton Centennial Pool; Manager, Assistant Manager and two Instructor positions at the North Queens Aquatic Centre; and Supervisor and Instructor positions for the Mobile Aquatics program. Detailed job descriptions and applications forms can be downloaded from the Employment section of the Region of Queens website, www.regionofqueens.com, or picked up from the Recreation Dept., 249 White Point Road, Liverpool. NCCP Courses, Liverpool

NCCP Course: Making Ethical Decisions.

April 18, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration $25 per person. Pre-registration is required by April 9 at 12 noon. After finishing this module, you will be able to apply a process for making ethical decisions that is based on the NCCP Code of Ethics. This involves: Establishing the facts in a situation; Deciding whether the situation involves legal or ethical issues; Identifying your options and possible consequences; Evaluating your options; Choosing the best option; and Implementing your decision. NCCP Course, Liverpool

NCCP Course: Designing a Basic Sport Program. April 18, 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Registration $35 per person. Pre-registration is required by April 9. After finishing this module, you will know how to design a basic sport program that meets the training and competition needs of your athletes. In particular, you will be able to: Develop a program structure based on opportunities for training and competition; Establish indicators of athlete development in your program; and Develop practice plans that reflect seasonal training priorities. Aquatics Training

Do you want to be a lifeguard or instruct swimming lessons? Training is being offered by Nova Scotia Health Promotion and Protection and the Lunenburg/Queens Recreation Coordinators Directors Association. To register for any of the courseS listed, please call the Town of Bridgewater's Recreation Dept. at 543-2274. * A Red Cross Assistant Water Safety Instructor (AWSI) course is being put on in Bridgewater and at White Point Beach Resort (time is alternated in the two locations) on April 30 (evening), May 2, May 3, May 7 (evening), May 9, and May 14 (evening). Participants must be age 15 or older. Registration fee is $110. It is a 30-hour course, with an additional eight hours of practice teaching required. * A Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) course is being offered in Bridgewater and White Point Beach Resort (with time being divided between the two locations) on May 18 (evening), May 21 (evening), May 23, May 30 and June 3 (evening). Participants must be aged 16 or older and have completed their AWSI. Registration fee is $110 for this 25 hour course. An additional 12 hours of practice teaching is required. * A Bronze Cross course will be held this Spring, date to be determined based on interest. This course is a prerequisite for the National Lifeguard course (NLS). Prerequisites for the Bronze Cross course are Bronze Medallion and CPR B. Registration fee is $100. * A Lifesaving Instructor course is scheduled in Lunenburg on May 2-3. The LSI trains you to be a provider for offering training in Bronze Star, Bronze Cross and Bronze Medallion. The cost of the course is $105. * An NLS recert being held at the Bridgewater Outdoor Pool on Friday, June 26, 5 - 9 p.m. (precert) and Saturday, June 27 at 10 a.m. to finish and be tested. The cost is $50. * A Red Cross WSI recert is being held at White Point Beach Resort on June 4 (5:30 - 9:30 p.m.). The cost is $55.
