Region of Queens Mayor John Leefe has confirmed he’ll be one of those on hand on Nov. 25 to speak with municipal councilors and officials in Shelburne County about amalgamation.
Town of Shelburne Deputy Mayor Elizabeth Acker noted that all municipalities in the county had received invitations to the meeting to be held at the Shelburne Community Centre.
Both the town and municipality of Shelburne have expressed interest in exploring the benefits and disadvantages of amalgamating municipal units in the county.
A recent Shelburne Municipal staff report on the issue noted the many options the municipality had and recommended that discussions at the political level were needed to proceed further. One possible option the report noted was to form a working group with two or three representatives from each municipality to begin discussing key issues.
In recent years, questions about amalgamation have been raised because five municipal units represent a dwindling county of a little more than 15,000 people.
Mayor Leefe will talk about how the amalgamation of the Municipality of Queens and Town of Liverpool was successfully accomplished in the 1990s and is expected to offer some insights on how the marriage of the two municipal units has progressed.
