Fire Prevention Week is coming soon, and the North Queens Fire Department has a whole week of activities planned.
On Sunday Oct. 4, the Fire Department starts the week by attending church in the morning. Then that afternoon the department is inviting everyone out to help celebrate the 70th anniversary of the NQFD at the Mutual Aid Parade starting at 2 p.m.
At 3:30 p.m. the Ladies Auxiliary is holding it’s Little Miss and Master Pageant, followed by the Queens Contest at 4:30 p.m.
On Monday, the department travels to Liverpool to take part in the mutual aid parade at 6 p.m.
This year, the department is reintroducing its “Red Dot” campaign. Fire fighters will be out Tuesday and Thursday, going door-to-door giving out pamphlets and “dots” for children up to grade 6 and senior citizens.
The dots are put in bedroom windows and are reflective, so when a flashlight is shone on the windows firefighters can quickly identify where children and senior’s bedrooms are.
Children receive red dots, while senior citizens receive yellow dots. The Lions Club is sponsoring the red dot program this year.
Wed. night is bingo at the fire hall with fire prevention prizes, and throughout the week fire fighters will be going out to the schools to give talks to the students.
The week wraps up on Sat. afternoon. Starting at 1p.m. and going all afternoon, there will be an open house at the fire hall with displays and rides in the fire trucks for the children.
