"I want my Canada back," stated Wells in a press release. "I’m running because I can’t sit idly by and watch what Stephen Harper is doing to our country."

Wells is the current President of the Nova Scotia Liberal Party. He was first elected MP for the South Shore in 1993 and looks forward to returning the riding to a Liberal seat under the leadership of Michael Ignatieff.

Wells, a lawyer with Hennigar, Wells, Lamey & Baker, acted as a spokesperson and coordinator for NORIGS 2000 (a coalition of fishing, environmental and community organizations opposed to oil and gas exploration on George’s Bank). He was awarded the Eco Olympic medal by the Sierra Club of Canada for his work. Derek has been a strong advocate for the South Shore, including the forestry, fisheries, manufacturing and tourism industries. His volunteer work included coaching of youth soccer, hockey and basketball and he has served on the boards of numerous community organizations.

Derek and his wife, Alison have six children, three grandchildren and seven horses. "I want the Canada I love to be restored for the benefit of future generations," said Wells.
