The fundraising is done. Now Habitat for Humanity, Queens Build has just one task left: build the house.

To celebrate, the organization is hosting a kickoff ceremony 2-4 p.m. Sept. 18 at the build site on Amherst St. “This is the shovel in the ground,” says Habitat for Humanity South Shore President Robert Boudreau.

The organization hit their fundraising goal of $60,000, and actually exceeded it, thanks to two events. The first was the charity golf tournament, which raised about $12,000. The second came from an anonymous donation of $20,000.

In July, The Queens County Advance reported that Eileen and Ron White, with grandchildren Mason and Bailey Whynot are the family receiving the home. With the family picked, the local group could design the home, a three bedroom split entry unit.

A press release issued last week stated that the TD Bank Financial Group had given $750,000 to the national Habitat for Humanity organization, which will go towards installing energy efficient heating in future homes.

Boudreau says he’s not sure if they will be able to tap into that yet. He explained that when a sponsor donates to the national Habitat for Humanity, the individual build project has to start before they can access it.

He knows for sure they will get drywall, a fridge and stove from Whirlpool, and blinds for the windows.

The group is still seeking volunteers for the build as well. Interested people can go to www.habitatsouthshore.ca/ for more information and fill out a form to volunteer.

There is also one key volunteer they require, a health and safety officer to make sure things are done to safety standards.

Companies still have an opportunity to sign up for “adopt-a-day,” when they raise money for the project and pick a day to help out with the build.
