Spurred on by Liverpool International Ukulele Ceilidh volunteer, Susan Borgersen in addition to Susan Lane, the South Queens Chamber of Commerce Tourism Committee has partnered with the Region of Queens to invite the ukulele-loving music icon to Queens Co.
Mayor John Leefe sent the official invitation last week.
Tourism Committee Chair Donna Hatt said, “Sir Paul McCartney and Liverpool, Nova Scotia just have too much in common. A town of the same name along the banks of the Mersey River, a passion for the ukulele and of course this being our community’s 250th Anniversary - it just seemed like extending an invitation to him to experience our Liverpool was the right thing to do, especially since he is already in the province. We really do hope he'll accept the Mayor's invitation."
Sir McCartney is performing in Halifax on July 11. He is known to frequently jam with the instrument in addition to recording with it. On his 2002 tour, he performed a ukulele tribute to fellow Beatle George Harrison, who also loved the instrument.
Mayor John Leefe said the effort is definitely worthwhile even if Sir McCartney is unable to accept the invitation. “And you just never know.”
A similar invitation in 2005 was nearly successful, but Sir McCartney couldn’t juggle the Liverpool request with a Boston commitment.
The 3rd International Ukulele Ceilidh is Oct. 22-25.
