Effective April 1, the fine will go from $5 to $10 if paid within five days of receiving the ticket. The fine for paying after five days remains at $15.
Council approved the motion on March 16. Originally the increase was only $2, but councillors felt it would not cover costs.
“Once all the paper work is done, I don’t see how $2 will cover the costs over the next few years,” said Counc. Doug Adams.
Mayor Leefe added this is the first time the fine has changed since 1984.
Counc. Hamlin noted the Region of Queens has one of the lowest fines in Nova Scotia.
Deputy Mayor Darlene Norman said hopefully this would deter people that choose to ignore the time limits due to the fine being so low.
“I’ve heard from a surprising number of people who knowingly park and not put any money in because a $5 fine is pretty cheap all day parking.”
