Janet Stewart, the owner of 547 Main Street, has very kindly permitted the Mersey Heritage Society to excavate a small area of her yard to demonstrate that history is all around – and under – us. We hope to encounter artifacts from the late 1700s.
The dig will also be a great opportunity for society members to take part in an archaeological excavation and learn about archaeological methods. Archaeologists will be on hand to lead the work and answer questions.
Known historically as the West Tavern, this building was likely constructed in the very early days of Liverpool, and shares its gambrel-roof architecture with the better-known Dexter’s Tavern near Fort Point. It is mentioned many times in Perkin’s Diary as a meeting place for the Township Proprietors.
This great event is the third in a series of events designed to explore and commemorate the 250th anniversary of the establishment of the Liverpool Township.
The public is welcome to attend.
